Lip - The use of SC oil seals also plays a vital role in environmental conservation efforts. By preventing oil leaks, these seals help in reducing waste and potential pollution. When lubricants do not escape from their intended environments, there is less likelihood of them entering ecosystems, where they can cause harm to wildlife and disrupt ecological balances.
PTFE, which is used in the well-known brand Teflon®, is less commonly used, but it is the preferred material for specific rotating seals in the chemical, food and pharmaceutical industries. This material is notable for having a very low frictional resistance and the best chemical resistance. It can also withstand a very wide range of temperatures in these types of seals; -80 ˚C to 200 ˚C. The shafts on which oil seals with PTFE lips are used require a harder and finer finish. Something like an axle sleeve can also be used to meet this requirement.
- The inclusion of 7% steel, often in the form of a metallic insert or spring, further fortifies the oil seal's performance
Metal case - A high temperature oil seal is primarily constructed from materials that exhibit exceptional resistance to heat degradation. Materials like silicone rubber, fluoroelastomers, and carbon graphite are commonly used due to their excellent thermal stability and chemical inertness. They can endure temperatures ranging from -50°C to 300°C or even higher, depending on the specific compound used. The unique composition of these seals ensures minimal swelling, hardening, or softening, thereby preserving their sealing effectiveness over extended periods.
- The 30% pertains to the metal component, often steel or iron, which forms the backbone of the oil seal. This metallic element gives the seal its structural integrity and strength, allowing it to withstand the pressures within the mechanical systems. It acts as a barrier against wear and tear, ensuring the longevity of the seal and the machinery it protects.
